How to Choose Inline Skates
Updated: February 2024}È Çblock_heading/sub_line=yes&select_head=1È Çset/block_1.script{
There are so many brands and models to choose from that finding the right pair of inline skates can seem like an intimidating task. This guide will take you through the skate options presented on our site and provide guidance on how to use our product descriptions and skate filters to confidently find the pair of inline skates that are best for you.
One criteria that is not covered in this guide is manufacturer skate size. Sizing conventions vary from one manufacturer to the next, and it is important to size each specific model that you might end up buying. For an in-depth walkthrough of sizing, we highly recommend you explore our Skate Sizing Guide prior to your purchase.

Some brands specialize in specific skate types, while others offer models across many skating disciplines. You may have a brand preference that comes from personal experience or a trusted recommendation, but if not, then we suggest skipping brand and using other parameters to narrow your search so that you get the most options.
}È Çblock_textÈ Çset/block_1.script{Gender}È Çblock_headingÈ Çset/block_1.script{Many brands sort their inline skate catalogs by gender and label their offerings as men's, women's, boy's, and girl's skates. Other brands simply release unisex skates, which are meant for any gender and reside in both the men's and unisex categories on our site. This does not mean women should not consider men's models (or vice versa), but sometimes gendered skates have unique characteristics like volume and fit that are important to know.
Gender |
Description |
Men's Skates | Men's skates often have a wider heel cup and a higher rear cuff height than women's models. Unisex skates are included in our men's skate filter, since unisex skates are usually based on men's sizing. |
Women's Skates |
Women's skates often have lower rear cuff heights and the forefoot is also sometimes slightly wider than men's skates. Unisex skates are not included in our women's filter. |
Unisex Skates |
Unisex skates are non-gendered and designed to be enjoyed by both men and women, though they usually follow men’s sizing. For this reason, unisex skates are included in men's filters but not women's. |
Boy's & Girl's Skates |
Size and fit are the same between boy's and girl's skates; color is the only difference, so feel free to browse both and see what color suits your child best. Skates for kids often have an adjustable range of sizes to allow for growth. |
Some skates are specialized for a certain type of skating, while others are more versatile and can be used across different styles. Inline Warehouse has two unique home pages dedicated to these various disciplines of skating: IW Fitness and IW Street. On the IW Fitness page, you will see Recreational, Cross-Training, and Speed skating featured, whereas on IW Street, you will be immersed in the adrenaline-filled world of Aggressive, Urban, and All-Terrain skating.
Skate Type |
Description |
Recreational Skates |
Targeted at entry-level and casual skaters, recreational skates are affordable and have relaxed fits that prioritize comfortability over performance. Best for brief, low-intensity skate sessions. |
Cross-Training Skates | Also called fitness skates, these skates are for working out and working up a sweat. Cross-training skates have close-fitting boots, varying performance features, and a wide range of models and wheel sizes, which makes them popular with many skaters. |
Speed Skates |
Specialized for distance and racing, speed skates are low-cut and ultra-stiff to maximize range of motion and power transfer for high-intensity skating. Generally for advanced skill levels due to the unique fit and large wheel sizes. |
Aggressive Skates | Designed for jumping, sliding, and stalling on obstacles like those found at a skatepark, aggressive skates have supportive hard-shelled boots, smaller wheels, and lower centers of gravity to help perform tricks. |
Urban Skates | Urban skates are highly maneuverable and give skaters the freedom to skate however they want, which is why they are known as freeskates or freestyle skates. Hard-shell boots and strong, rigid frames provide durability and the necessary response to navigate busy environments. |
All-Terrain Skates | Primarily focused on an off-road skating experience, all-terrain skates have large, air-filled tires that easily roll over dirt, debris, and small obstacles. They are usable on pavement, but won't be as fast as urethane wheels and require specialized tires to fit their unique frames. |
To truly enjoy skating, you need a pair of skates that suit your current abilities and allow you to grow as a skater. Using skates that are too far above or below your skill level can take the fun out of skating, stall your progress, and even cause injuries!
Skill Level | Description |
Beginner | New and returning skaters who have little comfort or confidence on skates. Beginner skates prioritize stability and comfort, are equipped with smaller wheels, and often have brakes. |
Intermediate | Skaters with some skating experience and confidence in their ability to turn and stop. Intermediate skates vary in wheel sizes, have some performance features, and only occasionally have a brake. |
Advanced | Experienced skaters with a lot of confidence in any situation, including crowds and obstacles. Advanced skates are usually less forgiving when it comes to fit, but have lots of performance features. |
Expert | Athletes who have mastered the art of skating and are looking for best-in-class performance. Expert skates are made using the highest quality materials and recent innovations to maximize their potential. |
The size of the wheels on an inline skate have a large impact on that skate's top speed, acceleration, comfort, and stability. As a result, wheel size should be a determining factor when deciding which skate is best suited for your skill level. Smaller wheels are recommended for lesser skilled skaters because they lower your center of gravity, which makes the skates more stable and easier to control. Larger wheel sizes are typically reserved for more skilled skaters looking for more speed and an easier time maintaining that speed.
}È Çblock_textÈ Çset/block_1.script{Other Options}È Çblock_headingÈ Çset/block_1.script{Boot Type
There are three main types of boot construction: soft boots, molded plastic boots, and composite/carbon boots. Soft boots are light, ventilated, and have a relaxed fit that makes them good for new and casual skaters. Hard molded plastic shells are more durable, won't stretch, and are highly responsive, but they can be heavier and cause fatigue if skating for long periods. Composite or carbon shells are extremely rigid and lightweight to focus on power transfer and maximizing performance.
3 Wheel Skates
If you are interested in the benefits of large-wheel skating but worry about the loss of stability and control, we recommend looking at 3 wheel inline skates. These skates allow lower skill levels to gain access to the large wheel experience because their frames are shorter and more maneuverable, which makes up for some of the responsiveness that is lost when going to a larger wheel. Visit our Three Wheel Skates Tech Insight for more details.
Heat Moldable
Heat molding is a process that involves heating up the skate boot and then forming it as it cools to better fit the unique shape of your feet. This creates a customized, personal fit that improves comfort and performance, and it also reduces or eliminates the need for break-in. Heat molding is usually optional, but there are some high-end skates that require it!
Boot Only
Some skate boots are available on their own - without frames, wheels, or bearings - so that you can have the freedom to choose those components and create your own specialized setup. Boot only options create more flexibility for skaters to customize a pair of skates the way they want them.

Our Inline Warehouse staff has chosen the best recreational inline skates for 2025 based on comfort, ease, and value.
Recreational rollerblades are recommended for new or beginner skaters, and/or casual skaters looking for value.

K2’s SoftBoots have a comfortable build that allows for a lot of ventilation. They aren’t at all restrictive and take no time to break-in. The only difference between the F.I.T and Alexis models the cuff’s heights on the back of the skates. The Alexis cuffs sit lower to accommodate for longer muscles that women tend to have and the F.I.T’s are higher. Either is comfortable for whomever, it’s just a state of preference and it’s great to have options!
}È Çblock_textÈ Çset/block_1.script{Ease: 9/10
These skates are easy to use, easy to get on and off and make skating easy especially for beginners. They have Stability Plus Cuff’s which offer a good amount of support in your ankles while making the skate’s weight lighter. Down below they have fixed frames which aren’t adjustable or removeable but they do bring your body closer the the ground which is another helpful aspect of the skate for one’s balance. They come with different lacing depending on which model you should choose but all are easy to use and make lacing much more efficient. The Speed lacing comes on the "Pro" and "ALU" models and the BOA lacing of course comes on the "BOA" models, but each are straight-forward lacing systems that waste no time in getting you in or out of your skates while keeping the closures out of the way.
}È Çblock_textÈ Çset/block_1.script{Value: 8/10
These models come at an average price with advanced lacing and little pieces that make them easy and comfortable. If you’re looking for something cheaper but in similar quality we recommend the K2 Kinetic skates as they’re made very similarly but with standard lacing. However, these skates have everything you need to get started or get back into skating with a seamless and fun experience.

The Phuzion skates are designed around comfort with fixed liners that have fixed MyFit Recall Memory foam which is made of a combination of high-quality memory foams. The foams are great because they pop back into place without your foot inside of the skates but while your feet are in the skates they mold to the shape of your foot, through its heat. It also has a 3D anatomical design that promotes its comfort even more.

They have Trinity Mounting with 3D casted frames that bring you closer to the ground, which makes balancing easier and feel much more natural with a responsive feel. They have reinforcements with an external shell that includes a torsion bar below for additional strength while keeping it lightweight. The light amount of glass-fiber reinforced plastic also promotes energy transfer and the mounting boosts it by being placed so widely across the front of your foot. The only reason these skates do not have a 10 out of 10 for ease is that the mounting makes them only compatible with other Powerslide Trinity frames (however there is a wide variety).
}È Çblock_textÈ Çset/block_1.script{Value: 10/10
The price is honestly very low considering all of the amazing little details that are put into their insanely good construction. This is something that Powerslide is regularly very good at, I mean they definitely didn't skimp on all aluminum frames. The Phuzion Argons are the highest-priced versions of the Phuzion Skates but they are the most comfortable. So the skate line has a scale of performance vs comfort but they all consider both factors greatly which is why they made it to the top of our list.

Our Inline Warehouse staff has chosen the best cross-training inline skates for 2025
based on comfort, ease, and value. All inline skates are fitness skates. Here we focused on our picks of skates designed for serious workouts and/or cross-training.
Many models carried over to the new year, with some managing to hold on to their position as our top picks. IW will certainly update should any new releases make their way to market and win us over.

Men's: 4x80 | 4x84 | 4x84 Boa | 4x90 | 3x100 | 3x110
Women's: 4x80 | 4x84 | 4x84 Boa | 4x90 | 3x100 | 3x110
Comfort: 9/10
Soft boots allow for comfort right out of the box, with great ventilation. The concerning factor of a soft boot is that if too soft, the boots will flex at push-off and lose energy (performance) to the wheels. The Macroblades however, are proven winners across the entire line. They blend comfort with performance. A performance mesh helps to keep you cool and comfortable, and the wrap is firm enough to capture energy correctly.
The two big wheel models (3x100 and 3x110) have a slightly different look, with additional support to handle the stress created by a taller wheel setup.
Ease: 9/10
Now with 6 different options, there is literally a Macroblade for everyone. Carried over from last year are two options at 80mm. One has the ABT (automatic brake technology) brake that allows the skater to always keep all wheels on the ground, even when braking. The highlight for 2023 is two new 84mm options (none in 2022) with one being Rollerblade’s first ever with BOA Turn-Dial Speed Lacing. Also carried over were the Macroblade 90, Macrobade 100, and Macroblade 110.
All are ready to skate without need for adjustment. In fact, the Macroblade skates do not allow for adjustments. The frames (and liners) are fixed, so they cannot be adjusted or be removed. This may be considered a pro or a con depending on the skater, but it gives them a high score on simplicity from Inline Warehouse. The high amount of engineering and testing from Rollerblade has them skating perfectly for most.
Value: 9/10
Our cost, production costs, and suggested retail cost has gone up on all Macroblades for 2023. This is not unlike most other items. But…The market conditions at the time of this writing suggest that it may take a good portion of the year before that pricing is able to take its full effect in the market for the Macroblade specifically. Early in 2023 (Jan-March especially), pricing and value may be even better than last year. Once it does take hold, the Macroblade will still be a top value pick as others would have raised pricing as well. But if you have your eyes on a Macroblade, grabbing them sooner than later will save you quite a bit of cash.

The Swell skates come at different comfort levels but they mostly consider performance a little more. They have fixed liners made up of either recall MyFit memory foam, 3D Adapt padding, removable SPC, or AeroFit with Recall padding. They all have a firm, footwrap that is supposed to fit closely for good energy transfer, but they will require a break-in period. Most cross-training skates should have a break-in period in our opinion so that they are more reactive to movement. These skates are also evolving, so if you’ve tried on an old pair it likely isn’t the same as Powerslide’s newer technology and updates to their design.
}È Çblock_textÈ Çset/block_1.script{Ease: 7/10
They’re really not made for beginners so the skates will not be the easiest but they will be appreciated by someone who is used to larger wheels and would like to feel a boost in their performance. One aspect that does make the Swell’s easier to ride is the Trinity Mounting. As they all have casted aluminum frames which bring you lower to the ground and focus around 3 major points of contact to your foot, they are a lot easier to control and balance in than others.
A large part of what lowers this score is the variety of options. When you have too many choices it can be hard to choose but we also have a Swell Skates Comparison Guide to get into the details with you. We also recommend reading each skates’ descriptions carefully before deciding which might be right for you.

Swell’s are made with quality components that meet the demands of a serious fitness skater. They have aluminum frames as we’ve mentioned with careful consideration to their lengths for different advantages. They have thoughtful and different padding to accommodate to different riders’ preferences. Some even have customizable cuffs for a better response. Powerslide did what they often do with skates, they made them well and they made them to last for skaters who love skating and want to enjoy their experience at a higher level.

Our Inline Warehouse staff has chosen the best aggressive/street skates for 2025
based on comfort, ease, and value. We've thrown in a couple of staff favorites as well.
Comfort: 9/10
USD has a great way of making high-quality products affordable and a part of their standard. Even in their lower-end team Sway Skates, the USD Basit Dual-Fit Liners that come inside of them feel premium with a neoprene toe and an ample amount of well-articulated padding. The pro-models have even nicer liners that are now becoming more and more personalized by the pro-rider with some residuals going straight to the skater. Making them limited edition, more desirable and they are all heat-moldable.
Ease: 9/10
The Sway’s have a very forgiving shell that allows you to get in and out of them a bit easier. There are also a few options for closures with many having a velcro 45-degree strap and some just the adjustable cuff straps. Underneath the soul plates have a large grinding surface and the Kizer Fluid V frames have a nice hook to their central grinding area but the Kizer Fluid IV Frames (that come on the USD Sway 58 XXIV skates) have an even deeper groove and anti-rockered setup out of the box. Either way the frames are strong and slippery with injection molded glass fiber reinforced plastic.
Value: 10/10
USD definitely did not cheap out on these skates and it’s one of the reasons why we love them so much! They were originally just supposed to set a new standard as an entry-level aggressive skate. As more skaters and the pro’s on their team enjoyed them so much, they decided to put a bit more effort into them. There is no part of the skate that is low in quality, other than potentially the Velcro strap, however, it makes them easier to get on and off and it’s easy to replace.

The Iqon AG Skates and boots all include an IQON x MyFit Prime liner which are removable and heat-moldable. The AG10 and AG15 both include heat-moldable shells with carbon fiber hybrid and Kevlar reinforcements being used giving you a fully customizable feel.
Ease: 9/10
They all include standard lacing that goes into the liners, and most include either a Kizer Supreme buckle or velcro straps that are of course very easy to use. Getting into the skate is simple but it's just not as quick as we'd maybe like them to be. The AG10 and AG20 have velcro 45-degree straps but the AG15 come without them. They are all very lightweight with durable materials that also makes them easier to use.
Value: 7/10
To be honest, they aren't cheap! They aren't our best value choice for a reason, but their quality is justifiable. The carbon fiber hybrid makes them feel weight-less as well as essentially unbreakable. They also use protective TPU and microfiber to ensure their durability and free to use 3D printing protectors that you can create at home.
The AG10 has the most elite design with a fully carbon boot with a lightweight carbon base that is flat so that you can adapt them to your urban setups. They are the first ever aggressive boot to feature a carbon cuff, and it is height adjustable.
The AG15 skates have a more old school feel and look with some leather and nylon uppers. The most affordable model is the AG20 with glass fiber reinforced plastic that is hand-lasted and injected with composite materials to strengthen them.
