Buyer’s Guide:
How do I Size / Measure for Knee Pads?

By IW | 2023

Measuring yourself for protection is a vital part of finding the right size so that you can be protected properly. When knee pads are too tight they can restrict your leg movement and will not feel comfortable on long skate sessions. When knee pads are too loose, you risk injury even further because they could just slip out of place when you need them the most. Read our guide to find out the proper way to find the right size for you so that you can ride comfortably and safely.

How to Size for Inline Skate Knee Pads?

Most brands ask for a measurement(s) 3-4 inches above and below the knee, or around the knee joint itself. Reference the product description on InlineWarehouse.com to learn of any unique measurement(s) or instruction(s). If your kneepads do not fit properly, you risk them sliding out of position or even coming off when needing them most.

If not having a soft tape measure, use a shoestring (or similar) and wrap it around your arm. Then measure the string.

The ideal fit is one that is snug, without being uncomfortable. It should no cut into your skin or cut off circulation. Nothing should slide or move once all straps are secure.

Why Are Knee Pads So Important?

Inline skating is great exercise, but even if not planning on doing tricks or jumps you can still get hurt. The last thing you want is a knee injury that could have been easily prevented.

Depending on skill level and/or type of skating, falling onto the knees is common. Kneepads will of course prevent scrapes and bruises, but they can also save you from suffering from a much more serious injury. Kneepads also reduce the impact of a fall, protecting the kneecap(s).

One of the most sought after protective brands on the market, 187 has knee pads for every player at any level or budget. Top of the line Pro Derby Knees are hinged for better mobility and Pro Knees are just below them with a slightly smaller profile. Slims are a low-profile mid-level offering and Fly Knees are one of the better pads on the market available on entry-level budgets. Gaskets add additional padding to any knee pad and ReCaps freshen up a dead cap (or a bland one).
