Nash Custom Molded
Hockey Skate Shot Blockers
4.0
Overview
The Nash Custom Molded Lexan™ Skate Guard Wraps are fully heat-moldable to provide customized protection around your skates. This allows you to block shots without fear and receive protection without adding a lot of extra weight to your skates.
Nash uses a 1/8" thick sheet of Lexan™ polycarbonate which molds completely to the shape of the skate for ultimate comfort and protection. Its design allows it to cover both sides of the boot and across the laces for shot-blocking protection no matter which way your skate is turned. They also included adhesive rubber shims that can be attached anywhere on the skate guard to help absorb the shock of blocked shots.

NASH LEXAN SKATE GUARD MOLDING INSTRUCTIONS | |
---|---|
The following instructions were provided by the manufacturer. Check out the video below for visual reference. | |
Step 1 | Preheat convection toaster oven or regular oven to 350°F (175°C). Traditional skate ovens don't get hot enough. |
Step 2 | Insert (1) Skate Wrap. Heat until flimsy (5-8 minutes) and check oven frequently. If left in too long, streaking and bubbles will appear and the skate guard cannot be reheated. |
Step 3 | Remove the Skate Wrap with oven mitts or welding gloves and center the Skate Wrap on your hockey skate. |
Step 4 | Immediately wrap the Skate Wrap around the skate using your thumbs to mold the top part over the laces and your fingers and palms to mold the sides. |
Step 5 | Hold securely for 30-60 seconds and then let cool completely. Attach the straps and shock absorbers. |

Solid skate guardI bought these after taking a slapper to the foot. Well, doing that a few times and finally getting fed up with it. If you play defense, skate guards are a must and this is a solid option.
I'm giving a 4-star because I've only just started using them and assume there's always room for improvement. If you go with these Nash skate guards, do be aware that the baking / heating instructions are for a toaster oven. I don't have one of those so I opted for heating them in a conventional electric oven and very glad they provided three sheets. The first was very much a test run as it bubbled quite quickly.
I found that setting the oven to around 350 F, it would take about 3.5 minutes. Definitely keep a watchful eye on it. I would even suggest taking it out around 2.5-3 minutes, letting it form a little to the boot, then putting it in the oven again for about 30-45 seconds, forming it again, and doing that once or twice more until it fits comfortably. Once they're formed and fully cooled, they definitely fit the boot snugly.
If that's too much hassle, go with the preformed skate guards.

Comments: I really like the idea of the form fitting protection. I've played a half dozen games and feel very comfortable with them on. Of course, I haven't been hit in the foot yet...Not as easy to form as the video shows. 2 things that help. If you don't get it right the first time, bake it again despite what the direction says. I don't think the lexan is going to lose any strength, but I haven't tested that yet. The second thing I found, hold your skate toes up. This prevents the top from getting too flat and it also helps get the "wings" to wrap around ankle and tappers the heel. If your not a do it yourselfer, you might want the preformed ones, but for the custom fit that you can put on and forget these are a good choice.
