How to Size a Hockey Skate Blade and Holder
Finding the correct hockey skate blade or skate holder size is a simple process and only requires a detailed look at your current hockey skates runner and holder. Both share the same sizing information and are constructed anywhere from 211mm - 322mm sizes or in some cases Jr 1 - Sr 12. It is important to note that every holder utilizes a specific runner-locking design, therefore it is imperative to know what specific holder model you have along with its size.

Step 1: Confirm Your Holder or Runner Size
Look at the heel portion of the holder and search for a three-digit number, usually located by the rear rivets. This three-digit number is the size of your holder and also the runner. Most blades also have this three-digit number stamped onto it too, so you can remove your current runner and confirm the three-digit number matches the holder. On the holder, you may see an "L" or an "R" beside this number, which simply indicates if it is the "Left" or "Right" holder.
In the case below, the player would identify their skates as having a 304mm holder and runner set up. Along with the size, it is vital to have the specific skate holder model which we will find in Step 2.

Step 2: Confirm Your Skate Holder's Model
It is now time to identify your skate's holder in order to purchase the correct skate blade. Located on the holder is the name of its make and model, found on both the front and rear post. For example, if you have a CCM JetSpeed FT4 Pro Skate, the holder is the CCM SpeedBlade XS Holder. "SpeedBlade" is located on the front post and "XS" is labeled on the back post, alongside CCM's XS runner quick-release dial.

With this information, the player would then begin shopping for compatible SpeedBlade XS runners or holders in size 304mm. If you are still unsure which model of holder you have, please use the graphics below for more guidance.
If the three-digit number on both your holder and runner are ineligible, no need to worry! Simply find your hockey skate's brand, model, and year using the provided information below and correspond with which holder they are listed under. Click the black button and use the sizing chart on the runner or holder's product page to identify your runner or holder's length by finding your skate size and width.

Multi-Fit Blades for Player Skates
The leading skate brands such CCM, Bauer and True have what are called "quick-release" systems in their blade holders. Players who carry an extra set of steel can utilize this system to quickly and efficiently swap out dull or damaged blades during a game or practice. Each brand's quick-release holder has a very specific locking mechanism, which requires the brand's specific steel to be used for the holder. This limits players being able to transfer their high-quality steel from an old pair of skates and use it on a new pair if they decide to switch brands. It also forces teams to purchase more steel since they can't use one brand on another.
This issue has been resolved with the introduction of Multi-Fit Blades, which are steel runners that can easily be swapped between quick-release holders of multiple brands. These multi-fit hockey blades offer more aftermarket steel options and are a must-have for teams and any player with skates from more than one brand. Check out the chart below to see the holder compatibilities between the new Multi-Fit Steel Runners from brands Bladetech, Byonic and JRZ.

Ice Hockey Runner and Holder Sizing Charts
All holders and runners have their lengths in millimeters (mm) stamped on them, but some brands may use sizes like Jr 1 - Sr 12. Additionally, there are multi-fit skate blades which are runners that can fit multiple manufacturers' quick-release holders. Regardless, shopping with your holder or runner length in mm is the most accurate and easiest way. The charts below will help you find your holder or runner size if you cannot find it on your pair of skates.

Hockey Skate Blade and Holder FAQs
What is a hockey skate blade holder?
The blade holder is the plastic component mounted to the bottom of the hockey skate boot. It secures the hockey blades.
What is a quick-release hockey skate holder?
These skate holders feature mechanisms located near the back of the holder that allow for the steel runners to be easily swapped without tools.
How do I find the correct skate holder and blade size for my hockey skates?
Look at the heel portion of the holder and search for a three-digit number, usually located by the rear rivets. This three-digit number is the size of your holder and runner. Most blades also have this three-digit number stamped onto it, so you can remove your current runner and confirm the three-digit number matches the holder.
Can I replace my current runners with a blade from a different brand?
Yes, only if the new blades are compatible with your current holder. Each holder has a specific locking mechanism so only blades designed for your specific holder will fit. For example, JRZ XS Runners can fit into the CCM XS Holder.
Can I replace my current hockey skate holder with one from another brand?
It is technically possible but requires professional installation. The holder may require new custom mounting and drilling, which might weaken the structure of the skate. It's best to replace your holder with the same make and model of your current hockey skate brand.
How do I know if my holder or blade size is incorrect?
The holder and skate boot are connected via rivets, and these will not line up properly when installing. The runner will not securely lock into the holder if they are too small or too large.
Can hockey skate blades be replaced without changing the holder?
Yes, depending on your holder. If your holder has a quick-release system, usually indicated by a trigger or dial, you can swap out your steel without changing the holder. Some skate models including most youth hockey skates have a fixed runner and holder combination, which means you cannot replace the runner.
How do I know it's time to replace my hockey skate holder?
A few key signs it's time to replace the holder are; visible cracks or damage, loose or wobbly blades, difficulty changing blades, or damage that prevents the runner from locking into the holder.
How do I know it's time to replace my hockey skate blades?
It really depends on the amount of skating you do and how frequently you sharpen them. Broken or cracked runners should be replaced immediately. If you are starting to experience a decline in skating performance such as unbalanced turns, slower stops, and a decrease in acceleration, it's most likely caused by the smaller steel height stemming from sharpening. This is a good indication it is time to replace your hockey skate blades.
What is a multi-fit hockey skate runner?
These are hockey skate blades that are designed to fit and lock into more than one quick-release holder. Since each brand has its own unique locking mechanism, multi-fit runners can be used in more than one brands holder. For example, the JRZ Multi-Fit Black Steel Runners can fit in the CCM SpeedBlade XS, Bauer PowerFly, and the Bauer Tuuk LS Edge Holders. These runners are a great choice for players with more than one brand of skate and team purchases.
