Forward Stride and Recovery |
Key Elements
- Start by laying face down on the floor.
- For power, push down on the inside edge and out to the side to full extension
- To help speed recovery, the skate must be kept low and recover back under the hip
- The knee is kept bent and weight is over the glide foot.
- Keep a straight alignment of the trunk and thrust leg at full extension

On-Ice Drills
- Form three to five lines at one end of rink
- Get into ready position.
- Each player pushes off with right skate to full extension.
- Recover with right skate and touch it to the left skate.
- Coast to ready position
- Do the same sequence with left skate, continue alternating skates.

Off Ice Activities |
| Stationary stride and recovery drill. Stand in ready position with
legs shoulder-width apart. Extend right leg at an angle and then
bring back under shoulder. Then do the left leg. Repeat.

- A slide board is one of the best ways to work on proper technique
with a skating stride
- Inline skating is another great way to work on your stride

Water Drill
- Hold one cup of water in each of your hands
- Don't let your upper body bob up and down.
- Keep your head level and shoulders square and parallel with the ice.
- Your knees should be bent.
- Try not to spill any of the water

Edge Control |
Key Elements
- The ankles control the edges
- Knee of glide foot is bent
- Weight on the correct edge (inside or outside)
- Distribution of weight is from the ball of the foot back to just in front of the heel.

Edge Control Drills
- Form lines near each circle.
- Player takes two strides and glides around circle on one skate,
inside or outside edge.
- Right inside edge, counter-clockwise.
- Right outside edge, clockwise.
- Left inside edge, clockwise.
- Left outside edge, counter-clockwise.
- Stress Ð glide skate, knee is bent and keep two hands on the stick.
- Try and glide around the circle on one skate.

One Cone - Inside Outside edge
- Form three to five lines. Put cone five to 30 feet away.
- Skate up to the cone and pick up one skate while gliding on inside or outside edge of other skate.
- Keep the glide leg bent and stick on the ice.
- Don't put other skate down until you've made a complete
U-turn around cone.
