Forward Stride and Recovery

Key Elements

  • Start by laying face down on the floor.
  • For power, push down on the inside edge and out to the side to full extension
  • To help speed recovery, the skate must be kept low and recover back under the hip
  • The knee is kept bent and weight is over the glide foot.
  • Keep a straight alignment of the trunk and thrust leg at full extension

On-Ice Drills

  • Form three to five lines at one end of rink
  • Get into ready position.
  • Each player pushes off with right skate to full extension.
  • Recover with right skate and touch it to the left skate.
  • Coast to ready position
  • Do the same sequence with left skate, continue alternating skates.

Off Ice Activities

  • Stationary stride and recovery drill. Stand in ready position with legs shoulder-width apart. Extend right leg at an angle and then bring back under shoulder. Then do the left leg. Repeat.
    • A slide board is one of the best ways to work on proper technique with a skating stride
    • Inline skating is another great way to work on your stride

    Water Drill

    • Hold one cup of water in each of your hands
    • Don't let your upper body bob up and down.
    • Keep your head level and shoulders square and parallel with the ice.
    • Your knees should be bent.
    • Try not to spill any of the water

    Edge Control

    Key Elements

    • The ankles control the edges
    • Knee of glide foot is bent
    • Weight on the correct edge (inside or outside)
    • Distribution of weight is from the ball of the foot back to just in front of the heel.

    Edge Control Drills

    • Form lines near each circle.
    • Player takes two strides and glides around circle on one skate, inside or outside edge.
    • Right inside edge, counter-clockwise.
    • Right outside edge, clockwise.
    • Left inside edge, clockwise.
    • Left outside edge, counter-clockwise.
    • Stress Ð glide skate, knee is bent and keep two hands on the stick.
    • Try and glide around the circle on one skate.

One Cone - Inside Outside edge

    • Form three to five lines. Put cone five to 30 feet away.
    • Skate up to the cone and pick up one skate while gliding on inside or outside edge of other skate.
    • Keep the glide leg bent and stick on the ice.
    • Don't put other skate down until you've made a complete U-turn around cone.
