1. LINER: The inner boot that is greatly responsible for your comfort. Many have Memory Foam for customized fit.
2. PULL STRAP: Also known as the ‘Pull Tab’, it helps to pull your skates on over your heel.
3. TONGUE: Padded for comfort, some will have a ‘Pull Strap’ at the top to assist in getting skates on and off.
4. BUCKLE: Holds your feet in position. Should be snug, but not too tight on your shins.
5. CUFF: Adds stability around the ankle. Size varies with skate type. Most are plastic, while some use carbon to reduce weight.
6. VENT: Designed to keep your feet cool and help prevent odor within your skates. The number and size of vents vary from skate to skate.
7. POWER STRAP: Also called a 45-Degree strap, this Velcro Strap helps keep your feet in place and prevent heel slippage.
8. CUFF HINGE: Allows the cuff to flex both forward and backward when skating. Range in motion will differ on a higher end skate as opposed to a beginner skate.
9. LACE: Secures your feet in position. Standard Lacing is shown, but other types such as Speed Laces or TFS Lacing are common.
10. BOOT:
If plastic, this area may be referred to as the ‘shell’. Most modern skates are now made from softer materials like that shown.
11. TOE CAP: Often ventilated to improve airflow and keep feet cool.
12. INSOLE Provides arch support and cushioning
13. FRAME or CHASSIS: Come in a variety of materials and lengths depending on skate type.
14. FRAME BOLT: Mounts your frames onto the boots. All bolts should be checked regularly in case they vibrate loose.
15. BRAKE HOUSING: Holds the brake pad. If not replacing the pad soon enough, this housing can be damaged. Replacements are readily available in most brands.
16. BRAKE PAD: Most brands have a non-marking version as well (grey in color). Brake pads last longer if skating on smoother surfaces.
17. WHEEL: Size and hardness depend on skate type.
18. AXLE: Secures your wheels to the frames or chassis. All axles should be checked regularly in case they vibrate loose.
